+# Gears
+
+- pinion in gear pair is small one
+- there are two important stresses in gears: bending and contact stresses

+## Gear Trains
+
+A gear train is a collection of two or more gears.
+
+This is used to go beyond the typical limit of two meshing gears (~10:1).
+
+### Simple Gear Train
+
+The train ratio of a simple gear train is always $\frac{N_{input}}{N_{output}}$.
+
+An idler gear may be used to change rotation of the output shaft.
+
+### Compound Gear Trains
+
+Having parallel arrangements leads to the intermediate gears not being cancelled out.
+
+A general formula is
+
