Material Selection

Terminology

• Light alloys --- metals with densities of less than 4.5 gcm$^{-1}$ and typically less than 3 characterised by higher strength to weight ratio than typical steel alloys
• Cast --- as-cast condition. Cooling rate and grain refiners are key to improve strength and toughness
• Wrought --- (rolled, extruded, forged) Properties rely on appropriate heat treatment or working such as precipitation hardening or work hardening
